In view of the fact that we are continuously striving to raise the safety standards offered to motorway users, a pilot project has been introduced to equip some service stations with a high-tech surveillance system consisting of a combination of technologies with radar and video sensors. The main purpose of the system is to raise the level of safety in the area around the service stations by identifying vehicles driving in the wrong direction and alerting such drivers to their mistake by means of lights and audio signals. At the same time the user service centre will be alerted to the potentially hazardous situation.
In addition to identifying vehicles driving in the wrong direction, the system is may also be used to process statistical data (average occupancy of the service station car parks and average length of stay per type of vehicle). This data is handled anonymously and is used purely for statistical purposes
